The suspense horror/dark fantasy story is set in Tokyo, which is haunted by mysterious "ghouls" who are devouring humans. People are gripped by the fear of these ghouls whose identities are masked in mystery. An ordinary college student named Kaneki encounters Rize, a girl who is an avid reader like him, at the café he frequents. Little does he realize that his fate will change overnight. Ghouls are terrifying creatures which feed on human flesh. When Kaneki is almost killed in an attack, he transforms into a half-ghoul, half-human hybrid and is forced to adapt to their lifestyle in order to survive. Ken Kaneki is a bookworm college student who meets a girl names Rize at a cafe he frequents. They're the same age and have the same interests, so they quickly become close. Little does Kaneki know that Rize is a ghoul - a kind of monster that lives by hunting and devouring human flesh. When part of her special organ - "the red child" - is transplanted into Kaneki, he becomes a ghoul himself, trapped in a warped world where humans are not the top of the food chain.

Series Parental Guide

nudity 2/10 In a dreamlike state while a boy is getting surgery, a woman comes up behind him in the dream. They are both naked and while no detailed genitalia is shown, the woman's breasts are visible. A boy is sometimes shown taking a shower. Only butt and chest are shown. Some sexual innuendos. A woman is occasionally seen naked but this is not in a sexualised manner and her pubic area is not shown.
violence 9/10 Although most of episodes are as violent and gory to give them a 10/10 and even more (if it was possible), they are some lighter episodes, but also violent and gory. The show is about ghouls, which are similar to zombies, and eat the flesh of human beings. These ghouls also fought against one another and human with strong ability and enforcement also surfaced in order to killed/captured all the ghouls. This had caused the amount of violence to be extremely plentiful. The opening scene is about a female ghoul eating the bodies of several people she attacked. A man comes up behind her to stop her, and is presumably a ghoul as well by the bloodshot eyes and the mask he is wearing. There is a lot of blood shown, but the bodies are covered by shadows. Just as the man is about to attack the woman, crystalized blood spikes come between them and she gets away. A sheet-covered body is shown in the the street, blood seeping out from underneath the blanket. It is the body of another person killed by a ghoul, presumably the same woman in the beginning. A boy and girl are walking through an alley when the girl hugs the boy and suddenly bites deep into his shoulder. It turns out she is the ghoul from the opening scene and tries to kill him. She attacks him with her crystalized blood spikes, stabbing him. He spits out blood and she smashes him against a wall, asking if he is dead. Metal beams fall on top of the girl, killing her. There is a lot of blood in this scene. A boy follows the scent of human flesh and finds another ghoul (1) feeding. It doesn't openly show him eating the body of the human he killed but you can see blood. He offers some to the boy and you hear a tearing noise. Someone (ghoul 2) comes up behind them and kicks the other ghoul (1) in the head. Blood flies and you assume he's been decapitated. A female ghoul (3) enters and her and the 2nd ghoul fight. She cuts him, blood flies, and he runs away. A ghoul shoves a fistful of flesh into another ghoul's mouth to force him to feed. A ghoul was stabbed by another ghoul in his stomach, and the attack was relentless as he continuously pierced the ghoul's chest as well and a lot of blood is seen splashing everywhere. Thinking of nothing regarding someone's privacy, a boy barged into a room without knocking in order to invite the one's inside for an event but discovered that the girl within is feasting on human's finger. Not much blood is shown here but the act is really creepy and detailed. There is a prolonged and terrifying torture scene, spanning over a few episodes, in which a young man gets his fingers and toes hacked off with a pair of rusty pliers. In one scene he gets a centipede forced into his ear, and we then we hear what that would sound like, which will scare and shock some viewers.
profanity 6/10 Despite bearing of such a terrifying theme, the amount of cursing in the original Japanese version is mild. In the sub, use of words like "fucking", "fuck", "bitch", "shit", "bastard", "cunt", "dick", "ass" and other profanities to heighten the atmosphere. The dub contains near frequent use of "ass", "hell", "bastard", and "shit". There is one use of "fuck" by a parrot in episode 9 but that is the first time it is heard in the whole anime.
alcohol 4/10 The story revolved around the participation of numerous adult characters, and this event has caused the popping up of scenes involving smoking and drinking alcohol. A boy was drugged before he was tortured.
frightening 8/10 The show is about ghouls who eat people and tear them apart, which can be a frightening concept, and the rating is R-17, so the show has a lot of blood and violence. One of the first things you see is a body being thrown against the side of a fish tank, which is a jump scare. The first fight is between two ghouls and shows blood dripping from the fingers and mouth of a female ghoul, which can be disturbing. The ghouls have red irises and the whites of their eyes are black, which can be creepy. There are many scenes where someone's eyes are wide and bloodshot; the way the screen vibrates and the music is low can make these scenes intense and maybe even disturbing for younger viewers. There is a scene where a boy is trying to eat human food but can't because he is becoming a ghoul; he frequently shoves things in his mouth and vomits. The music and fast-paced screen shots can be intense and disturbing. A boy tries to stab himself with a kitchen knife, but the blade breaks against his ghoul skin. Ghouls fight and hurt each other; blood flies. There is a lot of yelling and bodies get torn apart. The overwhelming psychological effect suffered by a boy is really intense as he is trying to convinced himself of being nothing but a human. The ending scenes of the last episode of season 2 are extremely saddening and are very emotionally intense. There is a sequence of a boy being tortured through different means. There are blood splatters on the floor, and he screams often. The torture itself is barely shown, but it could be considered disturbing and unsettling. Suggested rating R for strong bloody horror violence and gore, a scene of torture, nudity and language.
